چکیده

Serum IgM, IgA, and IgG concentrations were measured in 19 patients suffering from blood-dependent homozygous beta-thalassaemia. The study was prospective and the same patients served as presplenectomy controls. IgG levels rose rapidly and continuously after splenectomy IgA levels also rose but not so sharply. IgM fell to low levelr pattern was found in the cross-sectional part of the study comprising 39 splenectomised and 51 non-splenectomised patients who were tested once.

Binding of serum ferritin to concanavalin A: patients with homozygous beta thalassaemia and transfusional iron overload.

Serum ferritin concentrations have been measured in 124 patients with homozygous beta thalassaemia who were between 2 and 21 years old, had received 11--504 units of blood but had not undergone splenectomy. There were highly significant correlations between serum ferritin concentration and both the amount of blood transfused and alanine amino-transferase (ALT) activity. However, multivariate an...

Serum amyloid A protein concentration in bone marrow transplantation for beta thalassaemia.

AIMS To investigate whether serum amyloid A protein (SAA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations could be used in the management of beta thalassaemic patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation (BMT). METHODS Serum SAA and CRP concentrations were determined in paired samples from 66 patients with beta thalassaemia before and after BMT. Serum SAA concentrations were determined by an e...

Serum immunoglobulin and transferrin levels after childhood splenectomy.

Schumacher, M. J. (1970). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 45, 114. Serum immunoglobulin and transferrin levels after childhood splenectomy. IgG, IgA, IgM, and transferrin levels were measured in sera from a group of children who had been subjected to splenectomy in the previous 10 years. In those children splenectomized for hereditary spherocytosis, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, or tra...

Increased total serum IgE concentration in patients who have undergone splenectomy after trauma.

Serum immunoglobulin and complement concentrations were evaluated in 20 patients who had undergone splenectomy after trauma. The concentrations of IgE and IgA in the patients were significantly increased compared with those in controls. The IgE values were not correlated with the time after splenectomy or IgA, IgG, IgM, IgD, C3, and C4 values.

Hb E/beta-thalassaemia: a common & clinically diverse disorder

Haemoglobin E-beta thalassaemia (Hb E/β-thalassaemia) is the genotype responsible for approximately one-half of all severe beta-thalassaemia worldwide. The disorder is characterized by marked clinical variability, ranging from a mild and asymptomatic anaemia to a life-threatening disorder requiring transfusions from infancy. The phenotypic variability of Hb E/β-thalassaemia and the paucity of l...
